TB claims over 500,000 in nine years

More 500 000 people in SA died from tuberculosis (TB) between 2015 and 2023, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi told Parliament. - TimesLive (30 October 2025).
TB has killed more people than all the known pandemics, past and present, combined, he said.
Although a 31% decline was reported in TB-related deaths among people living with HIV, TB-related deaths among HIV-negative individuals have increased by 25%.
Treatment success rates for drug-sensitive TB have reached 83% and the success rate for the treatment of newer, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is 75% and 80%. Since 2023, 79% of the 270,000 people with TB had been identified and placed on treatment.
