‘Regulatory delays threaten Africa’s pharmaceutical ambition

A regulatory bottleneck caused by aligning Africa's pharmaceutical regulations with World Health Organisation (WHO) standards is preventing African manufacturers from selling life-saving medicines to major global procurement bodies, according Stavros Nicolaou, a senior executive at Aspen Pharmacare and chair of Pharmaceuticals Made in South Africa (Pharmisa). – Business Times (17 August 2025)
“A meeting between the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and the WHO in October 2024 has yet to yield a clear path forward.
Meanwhile, SAHPRA has succeeded in halving the registration time for new, locally produced products.
