R67bn to revamp Gauteng hospitals and boost services

17 Jul 2025

Gauteng Health is to use R1.7bn of its R67bn 2025/26 budget for hospital maintenance and new capital projects, reported The Citizen (17 July 2025).
The Department’s digital transformation for hospitals will be expanded to 36 facilities, following a successful pilot at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
Furthermore, two state-of-the-art LowDox machines, valued at R14m, will be introduced to enhance non-invasive diagnostic capabilities.
The budget will also be implemented to finance other key projects including reducing preventable maternal and perinatal deaths; R5.4bn to combat HIV and TB; and a “treatment time guarantee”.
To address staffing shortages, the Department aims to train 500 professional nurses, 200 undergraduate midwives and 90 postgraduate midwives by December.
