A study for Profmed, released by the SA Professional Stress Index 2025, revealed that 44.05% of 4 000 respondents admitted that sustained strain is negatively impacting their long-term physical and mental health. – Business Day (16 March 2026)
Professionals in the medical reported the highest stress levels at 41.81%, much higher than industries, such as finance and banking (8.08%) and the legal profession (7.56%).
“Systemic pressures, workplace culture, and financial strain are now intersecting to compound daily anxiety. The data show that stress has tangible implications for physical health: 33% report disrupted sleep schedules; 32% find their ability to exercise is compromised; and 30% have experienced disrupted eating patterns.
Unfortunately, many professionals delay seeking help citing unaffordable professional therapy; preference to handle the issues privately; lack of time due to heavy workloads; and the stigma associated with therapy.
