Specially trained pharmacists are now allowed to initiate and manage antiretroviral treatment (ARVs) for people living with HIV following ruling by the SA Pharmacy Council (SAPC), reported Business Day (13 October 2025)
The SCA dismissed an appeal by the Independent Practitioners Association Foundation (IPA), a body representing doctors to prevent the implementation of the Pharmacist-Initiated Management of Antiretroviral Therapy (PIMART) programme.
“After completing supplementary training and obtaining a special permit, participating pharmacists can dispense schedule 4 drugs, advise clients on initiating ARVs, and manage their ongoing treatment. This integrates them alongside nurses and clinicians in the fight against HIV.”
