SA doctors implant country’s first tiny leadless pacemaker

20 Jan 2026

In November 2025 Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion achieved a major medical milestone by performing the country's first leadless pacemaker implant using the AVEIR VR device, a tiny pacemaker placed directly inside the heart, eliminating wires and chest scars. The procedure was done by a team lead by Dr. Jean Vorster and Dr. Jane Moses. This minimally invasive procedure, involving a catheter inserted via the groin, signals a new era in cardiac care, offering better patient outcomes with smaller devices and fewer risks than traditional pacemakers. – Netcare Hospital
