The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) launched a forensic investigation into the procurement process of Bonitas, the nation's second-largest open medical scheme. This follows allegations of improper procurement processes related to a contract awarded to Private Health Administrators (PHA) for the administration of Boncap, its low-income option, reported Business Day (5 Nov 2025)
The CMS's initial scrutiny followed Sanlam's decision to move its employees from Bonitas to Fedhealth. Sanlam holds a 60% stake in Afrocentric, the parent company of Medscheme, which has a long standing relationship with Bonitas.”
However, Bonitas said it became "necessary to consider a new business model" for its Boncap option to curb costs.
