Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana expressed deep concern over the potential impact the National Department of Health’s (DoH) proposal of scrapping of medical tax credits may have on taxpayers, reported Business Day (13 Nov 2025).
The Minister's comments come amid mounting pressure from SA’s medical scheme industry, which has been anxiously awaiting the Treasury's formal position.
Meanwhile, the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) and the Health Funders Association (HFA), urged the Finance Minister to provide clarity on the matter.
“They argue that the tax credits are a vital mechanism for keeping medical scheme membership affordable for millions of South Africans. They maintain that removing this support would likely lead to a drop in medical aid membership, placing an even greater load on already-strained state healthcare facilities.”
